PVE at Stockholm Norvik Port

Ports of Stockholm is building a new port for rolling goods and container traffic, Stockholm Norvik Port. The Stockholm Norvik Port port is the Baltic Sea freight port of the future.
This project is the biggest construction project in Sweden at this moment.
PVE Crane Rental BV supplied 2 units of heavy duty crawler cranes, models Liebherr HS885 HD and HS895 HD to this site, both used for dynamic compaction works.
The Liebherr HS895 HD started the job in March this year, the Liebherr HS885 HD in June. The dynamic compaction works are foreseen till the end of October this year.
Stockholm Norvik Port is needed for several reasons:

  1. Stockholm is growing
  2. The Stockholm Norvik Port will ensure the efficient supply of goods to the Stockholm region, one of Europe’s fastest growing capital cities. With this type of growth, long-term investment in a well functioning infrastructure is essential and the port is an important part of this development.

  3. Ships are getting bigger
  4. Container ship volumes and the volumes of ships carrying rolling goods are increasing. The shipping companies are consequently building increasingly larger vessels, which is both environmentally and economically advantageous. The Stockholm Norvik Port will meet the needs of modern ships for deeper draughts, longer quays, larger terminal areas and short and easy approach lanes from the larger fairways.

  5. A modern port benefits the environment
  6. Stockholm Norvik Port complies with the EU ambition to increase the proportion of sea transport in relation to the total amount of transported goods. A new and modern port with direct motorway and railway connections, built using state-of-the-art technologies, is an efficient and sustainable transport solution.

The cross-Tagus bridge links Carregado and Benavente. This 14 km long suspension bridge is to expand the nation’s road system to cross both the river and the Ribatejo Lez_ria without a negative impact on the environment or farming activities.

This presented an interesting challenging for the builders. Each company of the consortium, SPFE, OPCA brought in its people and resources, and started with intensive teamwork. Magnitude is the correct word for a project involving massive figures For example, it required 54,000 linear meters of piles and foundations reaching depths of 55 meters. The pre-casting plant turns out 4 concrete beams daily. Each beam is 35 to 44 meters long and weighs up to 120 tons (metric tons). The project uses 150 tons of cement per day. On the section spanning the river, concrete will be poured which is transported through a 900 meters long pipeline. There are 5 concrete batching plants set up along the 14 km construction site and 14 bridges have been built on the service road. These bridges span the rivers, brooks and drainage channels that flow through the alluvial plain. One thousand persons, of 14 different nationalities are working on the project, including 850 living in accommodations at the jobsite. This international spirit is an integral part of other aspects of the project as well. The floating equipment and vibratory hammers are Dutch, the cranes, which can lift up to 250 tons are Japanese, German and English. Italians designed the precasting plant and the foundations are the responsibility of the Brazilian company Brasfond. The client is Portuguese, Brisa Engenharia e Gest_o, a subsidiary of Brisa Auto-Estradas de Portugal, the largest tolroad operator in the country.
